Header / footer "insert autotext" not working

Microsoft Office Word

The "insert autotext" button in my header / footer tool
bar is grayed out and not working. I can find no
reference to this situationnin any help document. How do
I get this functionality back?
Word 2000 freshly loaded on a new laptop.
Your cursor needs to be in a paragraph formatted using either the Header or
the Footer style.

Thanks, Charles. But that works for me neither in
header / footer nor body situations. In fact, the "insert
autotext" button is grayed out even on old documents
already containing footer autotext entries.

Have you perhaps saved a document as Normal.dot? Try starting with the /a
switch and see if that solves the problem. If so, see
