leads on what to chase down here? TIA! ChrisOK, I've gotten rid of the macro problem. For whatever reason installing Acrobat Standard put it's own template in there. Once I replaced it with normal.dot Word opens OK. But I still have the search problem with Explorer. I don't even have to enter anyting into the search field and WIN Office 2003 trys to configure something and then I get the explorer.exe error and it closes. I know this is not the correct newgroup for that question, so I'll repost it there incase no one comes up with anything here. Chris
this template, I get the error message "There is not enough memory to display or print the picture". I can save the document and work with it in Word, but when I use a third party counting software (Sylcount by Sylvan Software)it creates a problem. This software interfaces with Word, opens each document, counts it, and then closes it. It can only count one document because when it closes the document, the error message comes up and the counting program stops running. I have already downloaded the update described in KBA 828041, which is supposed to remedy the situation but

I stop this duplication from happening and stop this slow madness? Please please please. and Thank you.Delete ALL the normal.dot files. Word will automatically create a new one when it is next opened. When I delete all Normal.dot files word opens perfectly. It still takes quite a while to open a file though. And then, just like you said Word creates another Normal.dot file. But the next time I go to open Word it takes about 3 minutes. And after opening and closing Word a few times it seems as if I end up with two Normal.dot files. Any clue? Thanks Terry.Something isn't

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.Steve Open Norton Anti Virus and DISABLE the Office Plug-in option. -- Terry Farrell - Word MVP http://www.mvps.org/word/ Word opens as if nothing is wrong. It sits there for about 15 seconds saying requesting virus scan. Then it closes out stating Windows has detected a problem and must close down Word. It gives me an option to send a report to Microsoft. When I do that it gives me an option to view the error. The error message is: AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 18.104.22.16822 ModName
Word opens any file with all text selected (highlighted). Cannot edit other than format. Tried to re-install office, didn't work. After many attempts and restores, I got it back to normal until I opened a PDF. Adobe scrolls sluggish, then when I go back to a Word file, it is back to problems. I think it is related to Adobe somehow, possibly flash. Any suggestions how to correct? It really helps to know which versions of Word, OS and Adobe you are using and if they are all patched up to date. But a guess from your description is that Adobe has installed an add-in into Word (
2002 on two identical computers which I believe are setup about the same way. On one computer word opens and closes in 2 to 3 seconds. On the other computer it takes 10 to 11 seconds. When word opens if you hit the open folder the screen goes blank for a second then comes back with the open folder box. I am running the same anti virus software on both also. I have even reinstalled word but it hasnt helped. I have tried everything I can to figure this out without success. Any assistance would be appreciated. eZine: http://mousetrax.com/techtrax/ MVP FAQ site: http://mvps.org/I have the same problem on 5 machines (Windows 2000 Pro Sp4, XP SP2) running different versions (office 2003 pro, office XP) but only observed with Word, whenever word is opened it stays for a moment and then closes automatically without any error. Outlook doesnt work as well if using word as editor. I have done almost all the troubleshooting measures found, as its happening on 5 machines on same times in same office location i suspect it might be a virus??? I am using Trend Micro CSM SMB on that site for protection
We are having a new problem with Word 2003. When you click on Word file icon to open the file, instead of opening the file in Word as is usual, Word opens but with a blank grey screen. To open the file, you have to File>Open and then browse to the file. Does anyone know why Word is doing this and how to fix it? Thanks!BTW, machine is running Windows XP sp2, and we have had Word 2003 for a long time and have never had this problem before. No new software has been installed and the virus check says there are no viruses on the system.

Thank you for your time.See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm -- Terry Farrell - Word MVP http://www.mvps.org/word/ I have Word 2002 SP2 on WinXP. The computer has 256MB of RAM and a Celeron proc at 1.7ghz. It was provided by Gateway on one of their systems. Word opens and closes very slowly. file to open it, the computer just chugs and chugs, and I have to do CNTRL ALT DEL to reboot. Then, I get back into Word, and I can save a new file, but then I can't open that newly saved file. I did Disk Defrag, Scandisk, Disk Cleanup, ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, and rebooted. Still the same thing. Word opens, but then it won't open any Word file. All other programs work properly. For example, Excel opens and then it opens an Excel file properly. So, Word is the only program I'm having this trouble with. HELP, please! Thank you very much for solving my problem.Have

and then abruptly shuts down! The usual causes are: 1. Misbehaving add-in. 2. Corrupted Normal.dot. 3. Corrupted registry entry (usually the Data key). This article describes how to troubleshoot the problem: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm (My first guess would be #2. Solution: rename or delete Normal.dot. In Windows Explorer, you will probably need to set it to show hidden/system files in order to find Normal.dot to rename/delete it.)I have tried implementing the fixes that got outlined in the weblink. I click on a Word document and it opens and closes
I am using Word2000 9.0 and have never had an issue before. Now, when the program opens, all seems fine; but when I go to open a document from the drop down lists, the whole program closes. I notice down in the left hand corner that is is saying "requesting a virus scan" and then the program closes, if that means anything. I have installed ACT database and it does use Word after it generates a Sales Quote, and it has been after this that I have been having the problem. I have looked endlessly for online assistance to no avail. Help please?Likely the problem is not ACT, but

I have done three fresh install, scanning first, then defragging, then cleaning the registry before reinstalling Office. Nothing helped. I am having a problem with word on xp. It use to work fine now as soon as I open it, it closes again. I can't seem to get it to stay open. When I double-click a Word document, MS Word opens without the document. How do I make the document show in MS Word when it is double-clicked. PS. If I drag the document to the application, it works in a normal manner.See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm for one possible solution.I tried the suggested solution but it did not fix the problem. I was thinking perhaps to delete the .DOC file type in the registry. What do you think?
